- Thrives in diverse soil conditions, even poor and compacted soils, and withstands pollution and drought once established, making it ideal for urban settings.
- Trees grow tall (40-60+ feet) with a moderate to fast growth rate, providing quick shade and visual interest in urban and estate landscapes.
- Features unique serrated leaves and distinctive bark, enhancing visual appeal in urban and estate environments, especially when mature.
- Produces sweet berries attractive to birds and wildlife, making it a choice for supporting local fauna.
- Low Maintenance once established, Celtis occidentalis requires minimal maintenance, mainly occasional pruning for shape and dead branch removal.
- Susceptible to some pests, but typically not severe enough to discourage urban or estate planting.
- When planting in urban areas, choose suitable locations with ample space for mature growth, avoiding sidewalks and structures prone to root interference.
Most trees are sold by caliper size (mm), which measures the external diameter of the trunk, 6” up from the bottom of each tree in Aug-Sept.
Multi-stemmed shrubs and conifers that branch near the base are sold by height (cm) measured around the same time.
Plants are lifted out of the field and put into wirebaskets once weather permits and temperatures cool (in spring and fall) so trees are dormant for best results with transportation and planting.
